When I was in sixth grade my leg flew off. It almost hit the pitcher, while the ball I had kicked dribbled away towards first base. My legs do not have a history of staying on. I’ve tried straps (they chafed), compression sleeves (think medieval leather torture devices) and neoprene sleeves (sweat and they slip).
The consequences of a loose leg are not too great on the kickball field if you don’t hit anyone, but a leg with a steel edged ski and boot coming off on a ski lift could be quite interesting, not to mention getting off at the top. I have never lost one from a lift, but it was close.

The latest consequence comes as a new Dad. My son Colin, was getting old enough to bounce on my foot, except that my leg would keep sliding off as he sat on it. Major life issue? No, but it would be nice. Al suggested that I try a new style of liner on my newest pair of legs. I was using Flex Feet with laminated carbon fiber sockets and Alpha liners and the liners were not as comfortable as they should have been. There was a lot of movement in the socket and that caused some sores.

He handed me a liner with a shiny pin on the end and asked me what I thought. The pin at the end of my stump goes into a locking device built below the socket. A button on the side releases the pin when needed. It was a bit odd looking. I was used to flexible liners and rounded shapes. This was dangerous looking.I tried it because Al thought it would solve some problems.

I kept it because I can bounce Colin on my foot and the leg doesn’t come off.
